With the Moog synthesizer, you are the painter. Painter of sounds. Start with a blank canvas and CREATE whatever your mind, heart and ear desires and longs to hear. Begin with a perfectly even square wave. Mix and match. Shuffle it up. A little Low Pass filter here, take off some release time on the Volume Envelope there. Watch how the 1st oscillator syncs up to the 2nd, only to be controlled by the 3rd through FM in a square-tooth fashion, while all going through the LFO going at 6 times a second.

What does that sound like? Watch the videos.

Composition VS Performance

So I was reading this book on composition/improvisation/performance today and came across an important question/issue.  In Classical music (in the broader sense of the word), it is often frowned upon when the performer does not carry out a performance that is "faithful" to the composer(who is usually dead)'s wishes.  But what really were his/her wishes for the piece?  we can only guess.  Even if we follow strictly to the score to every single detail we would not be able to have a faithful performance and therefore the performer must choose, whether to follow the score or to follow his/her intuition.  how much of each is the question.

I thought this was rather interesting because while I'm working on my album and coming up with sounds I'm wondering how "faithful" I need to be to the genre I'm creating in.  Of course, genres today are no longer like how they used to be, and the closest genres of my recent compositions resemble Electronica (Dubstep/Techno/Grime) and Hip Hop.  So how faithful must I be?  i guess it depends on what I want to do with the music . . .  If i'm intending it to be hip hop, friends will judge it by hip hop standards.  If I write it for techno, guys would then have their standards.  arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I guess I'll just keep writing.
