With the Moog synthesizer, you are the painter. Painter of sounds. Start with a blank canvas and CREATE whatever your mind, heart and ear desires and longs to hear. Begin with a perfectly even square wave. Mix and match. Shuffle it up. A little Low Pass filter here, take off some release time on the Volume Envelope there. Watch how the 1st oscillator syncs up to the 2nd, only to be controlled by the 3rd through FM in a square-tooth fashion, while all going through the LFO going at 6 times a second.
After spending the first half of 2010 dreaming and conceptualizing, Tim Tsang, a.k.a. the "Moogist", has finally successfully completed his debut album, "Common Thoughts of a Robot".
To document his thoughts, Tsang spent 61 consecutive days in the studio conceptualizing, composing, recording, sampling, beat-making, mixing, and mastering until it was finished.
The album is approximately 32 minutes long, consisting of 16 tracks of beat oriented music infused with Moogist's unique Moog-playing, piano playing, and samples.
That is what music is, plainly speaking. The property of sound existing over a given period of time.
Look at Franz Liszt (studied with Czerny, who studied with Beethoven) and his B Minor Piano Sonata: 36 pages of sound ideas presented over a continuous time-span. 30 minutes.
But of course, music is more than just a science or a game of numbers. Some believe the concept of the LIszt Piano Sonata addresses the topic of Heaven and Hell - can one possibly be more profound? 30 minutes of Heaven and Hell. whatever that means to you.
"Sound over time." - Again, that is what music is, plainly speaking. The property of sound existing over a given period of time.
How? Thats a whole different question but is perfectly relevant and logical to ask, and is what distinguishes one artist from the next, one composer/musician from another. The necessity to pick and choose sounds over a given period of time demands creativity. what is creativity? Creativity is the ability that enables one to produce something significant with a given boundary or limitation. You have heard the phrase "thinking outside the box". To think outside the box, you must have a box to begin with. If there is no box, then there is no creativity, but simply, courses of action taking place meaninglessly. The box may be very small, or it may be very large - but it is still a box nonetheless. One must therefore be creative to be able to produce something significant - sounds in my case - in a given amount of time, using a definite amount of possible notes on my instrument.
music is more than simply playing each note "correctly". That is merely the prerequistie. The microseconds and nanoseconds that an artist chooses to place in between each note makes a world of a difference. On the next level, notes (or sounds) make up musical ideas, which we call phrases. Phrases make up entire sections and the sum of all the sections creates an entire piece of music, regardless of genre.
